Curiouser & Curiouser – Tell Me More!

Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland pushes the boundaries of logic and reality, challenging readers to lead life with a sense of curiosity, yet many of us are discouraged from doing so in the real world, including in the workplace. So, why stop our teammates from speaking up or questioning practices that could use a little revamping? To further explore this topic, Co-Founder and Managing Director of FlemingMartin, Marty McMahon gives us his insights on curiosity in the business world.

  1. How do you define curiosity?
“For me, it’s when someone wants to get the why. It’s wanting to know how and why things work, and not accepting the status quo.”
  2. Why is curiosity an important characteristic for leaders?
“When you truly understand your mission and why a certain process or science is used, subtleties begin to emerge as you gain insight into the subject. This will ultimately lead to better opportunities or new partnerships that could help you and your team reach their goals or push past them altogether.” See, Henry Chesbrough’s thoughts on Open Innovation for more information.
  3. What does a lack of curiosity tell employers about candidates interviewing for leadership roles?
“I think it sends a clear signal that the candidate doesn’t care about mastering his or her function, industry, or business. They’re not going to be the one to help you reach a breakthrough.”
  4. For those who lack a natural curiosity, how can they dig deeper to become more curious about their current role and make an impact in their work environment?
“I think we all have areas or subjects that we want to learn more about, but if you’re working in an area that doesn’t align in your natural curiosity then you’re in the wrong place. Ask yourself, what’s the number one frustration in your role today? Dig into why your company functions that way. If you can’t improve your current function or shift functions, it’s best to move on to a function that fulfills your curiosity, so you can make a real impact.”

To put it simply, curiosity in the workplace not only pushes the edge of innovation, but it gives employees and leadership alike the opportunity to pioneer a new thought process that could one day transform into reality. What are your thoughts? We’re curious!

FlemingMartin News

Last quarter, we discussed the subject of trust & transparency, but the corporate environment isn’t the only place that requires these leadership skills. George Dom’s article, “Building Trust: a Chicken or Egg Dilemma,” discusses the groundwork that needs to be done prior to pulling off death-defying airshow stunts as a Blue Angel. As these brave men & women train for the show, their lives depend on relationship building blocks including vulnerability and open candor.

To celebrate a year of successful searches, the FlemingMartin team invited friends, family, and clients to join them aboard the USS Potomac to enjoy the Blue Angels Fleet Week show! To support our veterans, visit the Blue Angels Foundation to make a donation today.
